How To Fix Your Gas Can Forever! No More Spills Or Leaks!

[00:00] With the price of fuel these days I can't afford to be spilling a lot of fuel [00:03] and unfortunately these EPA friendly fuel spouts are the cause of a lot of fuel spills. [00:07] There is a better way though. We got a bunch of replacement spouts to test so let's get the [00:11] testing underway and see which brand is the best. And the first test we'll see which replacement [00:15] fuel nozzle is the most efficient. Then we'll see which one is the most durable. We'll also [00:19] see how they perform on new gas cans. I just paid $50 for these two fuel cans by Midwest. [00:24] Full of fuel this can will weigh about 35 pounds. You have to press in this mechanism to unlock [00:28] the nozzle. Then you have to apply force to the nozzle to open it. The nozzle for the Midwest is [00:33] just over 7 inches in length and it takes 14.4 pounds to unlock the fuel nozzle which is not [00:38] very user friendly. It takes 15.6 pounds of force to get the fuel flowing. Not a good design. This [00:43] hook prevents the fuel nozzle from going deep enough to open the flapper valve. However let's [00:47] go ahead and add some fuel. Unfortunately we're spilling fuel everywhere with the Midwest fuel [00:51] can. Not a good design. Trying to hold a heavy fuel can at an awkward angle is exhausting so you [00:56] definitely want it to pour as fast as possible. Let's add five gallons of water to a fuel container [01:00] and I'll add dye to the water to improve visibility of the water. The five gallons of fuel with the [01:04] fuel can weigh very close to 44 pounds. No leaks with the Midwest can. Let's go ahead and test the [01:09] flow rate of the Midwest can. The Midwest fuel can does not have a vent and that's really slowing [01:13] things down quite a bit. The fuel flow is also obstructed by the hardware inside the fuel nozzle. [01:18] And the Midwest can is finally finished in two minutes and 18 seconds. I bought a bunch of [01:22] different gas cans and also have some older cans that we'll be using in this review as well. [01:26] But let's first take a look at the replacement nozzles. At a price of nine dollars for three [01:29] replacement spouts or three dollars each is this another brand. Instead of replacing the entire [01:33] fuel can let's just replace the nozzle. The spout is made of ABS plastic. The fuel spout is very [01:38] close to seven and three quarter inches in length. To prevent fuel spills it does have an end cap. [01:42] It also includes two coarse thread and two fine thread caps. And another is made in China. The [01:47] inner diameter of the gas spout is pretty restrictive at only 10.02 millimeters. Let's [01:51] first install the vent cap. The kit does not include the drill bit that I'm using. Only one [01:55] of the two base caps fits properly. Fortunately, there's no fuel links with another replacement [01:59] nozzle in the cap. Unfortunately, I did make a little bit of a mess at the start of the test. [02:03] Even though the fuel nozzle is fairly small at 10 millimeters, the water is flowing quite a bit [02:07] faster. And another is already finished in a minute and 56 seconds or 22 seconds faster than the [02:12] original Midwest nozzle. At a price of 16 dollars for five spouts or three dollars and 20 cents each [02:16] is this Yamataka brand. The Yamataka spout is very close to eight inches in length. It's [02:21] supposed to work with one, two, five, and ten gallon fuel cans. It includes both fine and [02:25] coarse thread caps. It's supposed to work with mouth sizes 1.7 to 1.82 inches. And the Yamataka [02:30] is made in China. Just over 13 millimeters is around three millimeters larger than another's [02:35] nozzle. Fortunately, one of the Yamataka base caps does fit the Midwest can perfectly. [02:39] No links with the Yamataka. The name Yamataka sounds fast and the name really seems to fit [02:44] as the flow rate is fantastic. And the Yamataka is already finished in a minute and 18 seconds. [02:48] Now that's a huge improvement over the clunky nozzle that comes with the Midwest can. [02:52] Also at a price of 16 dollars for five spouts or three dollars and 20 cents each is this [02:56] Suwala brand. It includes both fine and coarse threaded collar caps. The Gliment V spouts are [03:00] high flow, leak free, and easy to install. The overall length of the nozzle tube is around 8.1 [03:05] inches in length. It also comes with two different types of gas can vents. It's supposed [03:09] to work with fuel cans that have a mouth size of 1.7 to 1.82 inches. You will need a drill [03:14] bit to install the discharge cap. And Suwala is made in China. 13.38 millimeters is just a [03:19] little bit larger than a Yamataka. The Suwala's base cap and nozzle offer a very nice fit on the [03:23] Midwest can. Fortunately, no links with the fuel nozzle. I'm wearing gloves so I'll have to place [03:28] the thumb over the tip of the nozzle to avoid another fuel spill. The Suwala seems to be [03:31] performing just as well as a Yamataka if not better. In a minute and 15 seconds is [03:35] good enough to move into the lead. At a price of ten dollars for three spouts or three dollars [03:39] and thirty three cents each is this Killimba brand. They're supposed to be designed for one, [03:43] two, and five gallon cans. The kit includes three gas can funnel spouts, three vent caps, [03:48] six cap seals, six cap adapters, and a drill bit. The Killimba is very close to 8.2 inches in length [03:53] and the Killimba is made in China. The Killimba is about 13.44 millimeters. The Killimba's base [03:59] cap and nozzle offer a very good fit with the Midwest can. No links with the Killimba. The [04:03] Killimba is also demonstrating a really good flow rate and looks to be a huge improvement [04:07] over the poorly designed Midwest nozzle. In a minute 19 seconds is indeed a huge improvement [04:11] and good enough to move into third place. At a price of 17 dollars for four spouts or four [04:15] dollars and 25 cents each is this generic brand. It's supposed to work with Scepter, Got, Briggs, [04:20] Blitz, Rubbermaid, Midwest, Eagle, Igloo, and more. It includes two different types of base [04:24] cap including both fine and coarse thread. The fuel nozzle is very close to seven inches in [04:29] length. The fuel nozzle cap does include a gasket and the generic is made in China. [04:33] The generic is a little bit larger than the Killimba at 13.58 millimeters. The generic offers a very [04:38] good fit with the Midwest can and there aren't any leaks. Choosing between a flexible nozzle and one [04:42] that remains in a fixed position is about personal preference. With that said draining the last few [04:46] ounces of fuel seems to be easier with a flexible nozzle compared to this design. And it's a minute [04:51] and 28 seconds for the generic. At a price of nine dollars for two spouts or four dollars and [04:55] 50 cents each is this Osprey brand. Designed for one, two, and five gallon gas cans. They [05:00] claim that they have thick rubber gaskets. They're supposed to be made from high quality HDPE. [05:04] The claim is designed to prevent overflow. And the Osprey is made in China. The Osprey sprout [05:09] is very close to seven and three quarter inches in length. The Osprey has a larger spout yet at [05:13] 16.65 millimeters. The base cap and the nozzle for the Osprey fits very nicely and there aren't [05:18] any leaks. A five gallon can filled with fuel is pretty heavy and we want the fuel to flow as [05:22] quickly as possible. With a 16.65 millimeter opening the water is flowing very quickly. [05:27] And the Osprey has already finished in only 56 seconds to take the lead from the Zuala. [05:31] At a price of nine dollars for two spouts or four dollars and 50 cents each is a Siler brand. [05:36] Designed for one, two, five, and ten gallon gas cans. It's supposed to fit mouths ranging [05:40] from 1.7 to 1.82 inches. They claim that their system offers a no spill design. And the Siler [05:45] brand is made in China. And the Siler is approximately eight inches in length. The Siler [05:49] is at 14.12 millimeters. Very nice fitting base cap and nozzle with the Siler and there [05:54] aren't any leaks. The Siler has a larger spout opening than most of the previous brands and that's [05:58] really helping. A minute and eight seconds is good enough to move into second place. At a price of [06:02] 17 dollars for three spouts or five dollars and 67 cents each is this Gedlex brand. It's designed [06:07] for gas cans manufactured before 2009. Each nozzle comes with a sealed cap so no fuel drips. [06:13] They also claim you can pour fuel faster. We're going to test that. They claim to have a unique [06:16] L shape. It's not supposed to be easy to break and it's supposed to be more durable. And the [06:20] Gedlex is made in China. And the spout is very close to seven inches in length. The Gedlex is at [06:24] 13.69 millimeters. The Gedlex has a great fitting base cap and nozzle on the Midwest can. The Gedlex [06:30] is being held back a little by the size of the nozzle outlet. And the Gedlex is finally finished [06:34] in a minute and 32 seconds. At a price of 18 dollars for three spouts or six dollars each is [06:39] this reliable brand. They claim that they're designed to fit easy can at Midwest and Scepter. [06:43] It's also equipped with a filter screen and a flame arrestor. They claim it flows out without [06:47] over-engineered and anti-spill devices. All you have to do is drill a half inch hole into the can [06:52] and then push the vent into the hole. And the reliable spouts are made in India. They're [06:55] allows by far the longest nozzle yet at nine and three quarter inches in length. The reliable is [06:59] pretty restrictive at 10.16 millimeters. The reliable fits the Midwest can nicely and it [07:04] doesn't leak. If you're looking for a fuel spout for a much smaller can the reliable might be a [07:08] great choice with a much slower flow rate. And the reliable is quite a bit slower than all the [07:12] previous fuel spouts at two minutes and 15 seconds. At a price of seven dollars is this [07:16] Mejo brand. Designed for fuel cans with a mouth size of 1.75 inches. The kit comes with two [07:21] different size screw collar caps. The spouts are designed for one, two, five and ten gallon fuel [07:26] cans. And a Mejo spout is made in China. The Mejo nozzles about 7.9 inches in length. [07:31] The Mejo should flow well at 14.62 millimeters. The Mejo also fits the Midwest can and there [07:36] aren't any leaks. The Mejo has a pretty large spout opening at almost 15 millimeters and [07:40] that's really helping quite a bit. The Mejo is already finishing only a minute and seven seconds [07:44] to move in a second place behind the Osprey. At a price of 14 dollars for two spouts or seven [07:49] dollars each is this Mr. Yellow brand. Designed for the common one and five-eighths inch openings. [07:53] They claim they're made of thick, rigid and high strength plastic. And the Mr. Yellow spouts are [07:57] made in China. The Mr. Yellow is very close to seven inches in length. The Mr. Yellow should [08:02] move fuel quickly at 15.34 millimeters. Mr. Yellow's base cap and fuel spout fit nicely. [08:07] Unfortunately the fuel spout cap is a leaker. Mr. Yellow might be a leaker but it's designed [08:11] for high liquid flow rate. And it performed better than average at a minute and 16 seconds. At a [08:16] price of nine dollars is this Eliposa brand. The claim is made of durable PVC. Fits mouth sizes [08:21] ranging from 1.7 to 1.82 inches. It's designed for coarse thread gas cans. Unfortunately this [08:26] hose nozzle does kick when it's bent. The Eliposa spout is made in China. The Eliposa is very close [08:31] to nine inches in length. The Eliposa is at 14.13 millimeters. The Eliposa fits the [08:36] Midwest can nicely and it does not leak. Unfortunately the fuel flow rate is very [08:40] slow. And the Eliposa is finally finished in three minutes and two seconds, the slowest yet. [08:44] At a price of $27 for two spouts or $13.50 each is this EZ-Pore brand. The claim to be a high [08:51] flow spout with a seven eight cents opening. What's nice about the EZ-Pore is that it does [08:54] come with an extension. They're designed to fit one and three quarter inch openings. The only [08:58] downside with the EZ-Pore is that the hose nozzle is too large for a car that has unleaded [09:02] gasoline. And the EZ-Pore spouts are made in China. The EZ-Pore nozzle is about 8.9 inches [09:07] in length. With the extension about 16.5 inches in length. The EZ-Pore is designed for very quick [09:12] fuel flow at 25.49 millimeters. Let's drill a half inch hole for the EZ-Pore for a much larger [09:17] vent. Very nice fit and no leaks. If you're looking to move a lot of fuel quickly check out the [09:22] EZ-Pore. An EZ-Pore just ran circles around the competition and it's already finished in [09:26] only 40 seconds. Very impressive. At a price of $39 is this XR market pump. They claim a fuel [09:32] flow rate of 3.8 gallons. Auto stop and buzzer sound when the tank is full. They claim four [09:37] power supply options. It's a battery powered liquid transfer pump. It works with four double [09:41] A batteries. It'll also work with a cigarette lighter or USB type C. It also works with DC [09:46] 12 volt cables with a battery clip. The XR market has a sensor taking up some space but 16.48 [09:51] millimeters. We'll have to remove the flame arrestor for the XR market to work with the [09:55] Midwest can. There are four different adapters and one of them fits the Midwest can perfectly. [09:59] Let's go ahead and install the fuel pickup hose and we're ready for action. The top of the transfer [10:03] pump is vented and it will leak if tipped over on its side. The XR pump might not be as fast as [10:07] some of the other nozzles but this takes by far the least amount of effort yet. User fatigue [10:11] is definitely not an issue and the transfer pump is already finished in just over two minutes. At [10:15] a price of $78 is this key plug brand. Just like the previous brand the key plug is a [10:19] cordless fuel transfer pump. It also has auto stop protection. They claim 12 liters per minute [10:24] or just over three gallons. They also claim it's powered by 18 to 20 volt lithium batteries. What's [10:29] nice about the key plug is it works with both the duality as well as the Milwaukee batteries [10:33] made in China. The key plug also has a sensor and it's at 15.93 millimeters. The key plug [10:38] fits the Midwest can very nicely. It's also vented and it leaks when tipped over on its side. The [10:42] convenience of using either a Milwaukee and a dual battery is going to be hard to beat. [10:46] Just like the XR market pump, user fatigue is not an issue with the transfer pump and the [10:50] key plug is already finished in a minute and 25 seconds or 36 seconds faster than the XR market. [10:55] If it's all about speed the easy port came out on top at only 40 seconds. The Osprey finished in [11:00] second place at 56 seconds and Mijo third at a minute and seven seconds. I also purchased this [11:05] Garvey brand fuel container for $34. Let's see if it's any better than the Midwest fuel can. [11:09] The fuel spout is only five and a half inches in length. Lots of moving parts and this thing [11:13] is likely to leak over time. 23.2 pounds does seem like an excessive amount of force to get [11:18] the fuel flowing. The hook is in the way and it's going to prevent the fuel nozzle from opening the [11:22] flat valve. As you might expect the Garvey is causing a fuel spill. No leaks with the Garvey. [11:26] Let's see how long it takes to drain five gallons of fuel. The nozzle on the Garvey requires a constant [11:30] downward force and it's not user friendly. However, it does have a much higher flow rate [11:34] compared to the factory nozzle with the Midwest can. And the Garvey is finished in a minute and [11:38] 32 seconds. Let's remove the locking collar so that we can test fit the replacement nozzles. [11:42] Fortunately, every one of the replacement spouts will work with the Garvey and none of them leak. [11:46] At a price of $36 is this Viva fuel can. They claim it has a capacity of 20 liters or 5.3 gallons. [11:52] And the Viva is made in China. The Viva's fuel spout is very short at just five inches. [11:57] It requires under seven pounds of force to initiate fuel flow. Unfortunately, the Viva's fuel spout is [12:01] not designed to add gas to the car. During tip over, no leaks with the Viva. The Viva started [12:06] off moving a lot of liquid but it quickly slowed down since the can is not properly vented. [12:10] Very close to three minutes to drain five gallons of liquid is very slow. All the replacement [12:14] nozzles work fine with the Viva and Mr. Yellow's fuel cap is the only leaker. At a price of $39 is [12:19] this VP Racing brand. It's supposed to have a capacity of 5.5 gallons. And the VP Racing is [12:24] made in the USA. The VP Racing spout is around nine inches in length. It takes around 12.5 [12:29] pounds of force to get the VP's fuel flowing. No leaks with the VP Racing. The VP Racing is [12:34] the first fuel container that fuels up a car without spilling fuel. The thumb button on the [12:38] VP Racing is fully pressed and the water began flowing quickly. However, it didn't take long [12:42] before the poor venting became a problem. And it takes just over three minutes to drain all the [12:46] liquid from the VP fuel can. The Culemba, GEDLEX and Mr. Yellow do not have a base cap that works [12:51] with the VP. At a price of $42 is this Scepter brand. This fuel can also has a five gallon [12:56] fuel capacity. And a Scepter is made in the USA. The fuel nozzle is pretty short at only around [13:01] six inches. 28.7 pounds to get the fuel flowing is not user friendly. No leaks with the Scepter [13:06] fuel can. The Scepter is not well designed for refueling a car. The Scepter fuel can is not [13:10] well designed to refuel quickly. It really needs a vent on the back of the fuel container. The Scepter [13:15] is by far the slowest yet and very close to five minutes. Let's remove the hardware so that the [13:19] transfer pump will work with the fuel containers. All the replacement nozzles fit the Scepter except [13:23] for the key plug. At a price of $45 is this FuelWorks brand. They claim it's fast flow and [13:28] you can deliver up to five gallons of fuel in only 60 seconds. In order for the vent to work [13:32] you do have to maintain pressure on it. And the FuelWorks is made in the USA. The nozzle is [13:36] around six inches in length. It takes 19.5 pounds of force to get the fuel flowing with the FuelWorks. [13:42] No leaks and the FuelWorks is able to add fuel without creating a mess. The FuelWorks claims to [13:46] offer a five gallon per minute flow which is faster than any of the previous containers. [13:49] And the FuelWorks is already finished in very close to 55 seconds. Very impressive. The biggest [13:54] downside of the FuelWorks is that none of the replacement nozzles will work with the fuel can. [13:58] At a price of $29 is this NoSpill brand. Since the NoSpill is a 2.5 gallon container I won't [14:03] compare the flow rate. And a NoSpill is made in the USA. It's not designed to refuel a vehicle. [14:08] 11.2 pounds of force is needed to get the fuel flowing. Unfortunately the mouth of the [14:12] fuel container is pretty large. The only two replacements that will work include both of [14:16] the transfer pump systems. Fortunately all the replacement nozzles do fit the six gallon [14:20] Midwest can except for the GEDLEX. With the vintage Briggs and Stratton fuel container [14:24] the reliable XR market pump and key plug are the only options that work. For the factory [14:28] fuel containers with their original FuelSpouse the FuelWorks is by far the fastest to drain [14:32] 5 gallons in only 55 seconds. The Garvey finished in second place at a minute and 32 seconds. When [14:37] trying to dispense a completely full 5 gallon fuel container I've accidentally applied force [14:42] to many types of fuel nozzles causing leaks around the spout. At 1.1 pounds water began [14:46] to leak from the Midwest FuelSpout. At just over 14 pounds fuel began leaking around the base cap. [14:51] None of the fuel nozzles are designed for this type of force but accidents do happen. [14:54] The nether performed well at just under 35 pounds before leaking. There's no damage the [14:59] rubber seal just needs adjusted. The Yamataka performed even better than another at 48.4 pounds [15:04] of force and no permanent damage to the spout. The Zuala began leaking at just over 28 pounds [15:08] of force. No damage to the spout. The Culemba began leaking even sooner at just under 16 [15:13] pounds but there's no permanent damage to the spout. The generic Austin performed better than [15:17] the factory Midwest spout at just over 27 pounds and did not experience any damage. [15:21] Unfortunately the Osprey is really light duty and it's already leaking at just 2.1 pounds of [15:26] force. None of the other replacement spouts are this flimsy. The Silar is much more durable [15:31] and the Silar began leaking at just over 19 pounds but no permanent damage. The Gedlex began [15:36] leaking at over 32 pounds which is better than average. The reliable gave up pretty early at [15:40] just over 10 pounds of force. The Mejo performed quite a bit better than average at 26 pounds [15:44] and there's no damage to the Mejo. Mr. Yellow made it to just over 40 pounds before shifting [15:49] position and then springing a leak. Both of the Aliposa nozzles pull apart easily. However this [15:54] nozzle refuses to leak. The EZ-Pore is designed to bend a lot and not leak. 63.5 pounds is by far [15:59] the best yet. So the Aliposa came out on top at more than 88 pounds and did not leak. The EZ-Pore [16:04] finished in second place and began leaking at around 63.5 pounds. On the way to the fuel [16:09] station and back fuel containers run the risk of tipping over. So let's test the tip over [16:13] angle next. The Midwest canned is first and it tipped over at 32.6 degrees. Next is the Garvey [16:18] and it tipped over much sooner at only 26.1 degrees. The Viva is tall and skinny and as expected [16:24] it's the worst yet at 21.3 degrees. The VP Raceon is performing similar to the Midwest and it tipped [16:29] over at 32.6 degrees. The Scepter is the best yet and it tipped over at 35.2 degrees. The last [16:35] brand is the Fuelworks and it tipped over at 43 degrees which is by far the best yet. Very [16:40] impressive. So which brand is the best? The left side of the chart includes some basic information [16:44] that was not included in calculating the winner of this review. I can further all data on the [16:48] right side of the chart into a first and last place ranking. And the EZ-Pore came out on top [16:52] with an average finish at 1.5. It finished in first or second place in each of the categories of [16:57] testing. It moves a lot of fuel and it's very durable. I really like that it comes with a spout [17:01] extension which allows it up to 16.5 inches of reach. The EZ-Pore is compatible with most of [17:06] the fuel cans tested. Compared to the clunky fuel nozzles that come with new fuel cans the [17:10] EZ-Pore is by far superior. If you're looking for a replacement fuel nozzle this would definitely [17:14] be my top pick. Mr. Yellow and the Yamataka finished in a two-way tie for second place with [17:18] an average finish of fifth. Mr. Yellow is a rigid fuel nozzle and the Yamataka is a flexible nozzle. [17:23] Both brands are compatible with most of the fuel cans. I'd buy either of these replacement nozzles [17:28] if the price is right. If you have a bad back or you're trying to save your back I really like [17:31] the key plug or the XR market transfer pumps. They don't move fuel as quickly as some of the [17:35] replacement nozzles but they free up your hands and do something else while they're fueling up. [17:39] It's so nice to finally find a solution to those clunky fuel nozzles that come with new fuel [17:43] cans.
